Research Summer School

Introduction

This training course will introduce participants to research planning and the different aspects of research designs. It will allow the trainee to gain experience in construction of research proposals and critical appraisal. The participant will be acquainted with skills in questionnaire design, data collection and interviewing techniques. Validity and reliability of diagnosis in medical and dental practice will be understood. Effective evaluation of training programs will be discussed. Skills in data analysis, presentation and interpretation will be gained. Ethical issues in medical research will be highlighted.

The course is contextual, i.e. it follows the context of research & it is conceptual. The course will be delivered over a period of five weeks and the activities will be conducted for three days each week to a total of fifteen days.

Upon completion of this part, the participants will be able to:

·       Define the main statistical concepts and tests used in health research

·       Analyze data using the various statistical tests

·       Analyze data & produce tables & graphs using computer software

·       Discuss the selection and use of measures for central tendency

·       Discuss the selection and use of measures for dispersal

·       Describe the characteristics of normal and standard normal curves

·       Define the terms correlation and correlation coefficient.

·       Examine the logic of hypotheses testing for retaining or rejecting null hypotheses.

·       Demonstrate the use of the %2 test for analyzing nominal scale data

·       Describe the conventional way in which quantitative research is presented for publication

·       Report research using the various types of manuscripts

·       Write a report of an assigned research
